Mobile might be the single most important word in technology, digital marketing, and overseas student recruitment. What you don't know about mobile CAN hurt you.
Matt Collins, the Global Director of Applications and Partner Marketing at Microsoft, knows a whole lot about mobile and he was a special guest presenter at the 2014 Intead Global Marketing Workshop for Academic Leaders. Learn what you need to know about mobile and how it will affect your marketing and recruiting strategies.
Did you know?
- In many developing countries web users are skipping over the desktop and laptop phase and going straight to mobile devices.
- 80% of the time people spend on smartphones they spend on apps. There is a real preference throughout the world for apps.
- Half of ALL emails are read on mobile devices.
- Responsive web design is critical.*
- We need to create a "mobile first" attitude towards digital marketing.**
*Responsive web design means that your website and web experience adapts across various devices (computers, smartphones and tablets). It allows viewers to have a positive experience on any of the devices they could be using.
**A "mobile first" attitude means that mobile isn't simply an afterthought. Mobile design moves to the forefront of thinking and guides design decisions. Refer back to above facts on the extent of mobile usage. It's huge!
Mr. Collins commented on the qualities of successful mobile strategies. Key words include: scale, coding/data and integration. As you develop a mobile strategy keep in mind that your goals include: reaching the majority of users that best fit your institution (scale); creating content that is useful, compelling and motivating (coding/data); and effectively linking your IT and marketing departments into a symbiotic relationship (integration).
Mr. Collins' presentation offered many practical ideas that institutions could immediately deploy. We are fortunate to be able to offer you both Mr. Collins' slides from the Global Marketing Workshop and a recent podcast he recorded with Intead.
