Pull-Through Conversations: A Case Study in “Reel” Student Connections

When we talk about brand building, especially in the edu space, we often focus on the big strategies: multichannel campaigns, search engine marketing, CRM integration, data analytics. All undeniably important. But what really breaks through to students? Content that feels personal – the kind that makes your target audience feel seen and understood.

Think, an Instagram Reel featuring a current student sharing their journey and pouring a bit of their heart out. A TikTok breaking down the real cost of living on campus and the pride in managing the cost. Stories that help students bring their imagined academic and social experiences to life. Our audience is on the cusp of a new chapter, be it undergrad, grad, or secondary school.

Good content helps them see their future. Great content helps them feel it. Below you can download our case study and use our results as a benchmark as you evaluate your own campaigns.

We recently worked with a higher ed NGO positioning the UK as a first-choice study destination for US students. The campaign was a success (more on the metrics below). Why? We delivered content that spoke directly to our audience. That, and we brought the conversation to them on the right channels. We made the academic options feel within reach.

The thing about social media is it gives you a chance to kickstart real conversations. What’s campus life like there? What’s the social scene like? What does student support really look like? How hard are the academics, really?

Well-scripted content doesn’t always need polish (though sometimes it helps). The point is: it should be intentional, relatable, and relevant. All that authenticity stuff. If you’re doing it right, you’re not tossing up a Reel and hoping for the best. You’re showing up in the spaces your audience already trusts, with content they actually want to watch.

What made our recent campaign especially effective was the pull-through. As the target audience engaged with the content and wanted to learn more, we extended the conversation across platforms.

In this case, we built connections with students on Instagram and targeted high school counselors via LinkedIn. From there, we directed each audience to tailored pages on the organization’s website, delivering the information we knew they would be looking for -- anticipating their questions.

Understanding your user journey is all about anticipating and responding to the questions they will want answered.

The campaign we ran lasted 8 months and had a media buy budget of just $28k. Want a closer look? Read on to download our quick-hit case study and our benchmarking data…

Understanding Social Media Algorithms for Student Recruitment

Despite what our writers like to think, it’s not all about content. Digital marketing is also about math. Social media runs on numbers after all. Since we just presented at PIE Live in Boston last week, we are pretty sure there is a pun about the value of pi and algorithms here somewhere.

While marketers don’t need to build the algorithmic equations that power social media platforms, understanding how they work, or rather the intent of why they work, does matter.

Social media algorithms evaluate and prioritize user behavior. These algorithms, a set of rules and signals that rank content, are proprietary and organize social feeds based on user interaction. Each algorithm aims to create highly relevant, interesting content for individual users, which is of course the crux of our society’s love-hate relationship with this addictive medium.

Today we dive into the intent behind the feeds of 5 top platforms so you can better fit and filter the content you’re pushing out to prospective students. We break down how algorithms differ across major social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X). You’ll want your team to keep this post handy when thinking on your social media marketing strategy. Read on…

LinkedIn for Edu Marketing? - Career-Minded Students Say Yes!

All recruitment conversations with students lead to careers.

Disagree? Convince us otherwise.

When prospective students ask about your top programs, they’re really inquiring about their career paths. Questions about student outcomes? They’re assessing their post-degree job prospects. Asking about your institution’s rankings? They are assessing how your degree will play on their CV as they apply for jobs. Inquiring about alumni connections? Clearly thinking about their career network. Calculating your institution’s ROI? All about grads’ salaries.

Look to our recent Know Your Neighborhood (KYN) survey where a full 84% of respondents view career advancement as their primary motivation for studying abroad. Over 99% will tell you this is also their family’s top reason for pushing them forward. So, career opportunities matter – a whole lot.

Which begs the question: If prospective students are thinking about careers so much and you have a thoughtful, creative (not stale) social media presence (you do, right?), then wouldn’t it make sense to weave LinkedIn, the top social media platform for the career-minded, into your marketing strategy? Especially when it comes to your graduate programs. More reasons? Consider your referral sources including your alumni network and adjacent target audiences like high school counselors and consulate staff. Turns out, LinkedIn is where these folks live and the platform could be a great place for your institution to connect with a career-minded (read as "less playful") tone.

The latest data from LinkedIn shows its network boasts over 1 billion registered users from 200 countries and regions worldwide. That said, per We Are Social, only 1 in 3 (or somewhere between 330 – 350 million) are active on a monthly basis. This is not Tik Tok! Still the numbers are high enough to matter and much more audience targeted. Within these data you can also find 136,000 schools listed. Yours is likely among them.

Impressive numbers overall, though at some point these supersized stats can feel a bit meaningless. That's why we write about them - unearthing sense from the writhing mess that is social media.

The following numbers may be more tangible for your recruitment work: 50.6% of LinkedIn users worldwide are between the ages of 25 and 34; 24.5% are 18 to 24 (Statista). Further, it’s the 4th most used social platform among our KYN respondents (prospective international students), falling in line behind #1 Facebook, #2 YouTube, and #3 Instagram. Where they use other platforms for entertainment, connecting with friends, and yes, research, they turn to LinkedIn with far more specific tasks in mind. It's all about career opportunities. Perhaps your case for building a LinkedIn recruitment strategy is beginning to take shape.

Fact is, institutions like yours are increasingly using LinkedIn as a recruitment tool. Its professional focus and networking capabilities make it useful for connecting with career-oriented prospects, particularly those seeking higher degrees, as well as alumni who are arguably your ultimate word of mouth advocates. Not sure if you’re getting the most out of your institution’s account? We’ll tell you how.

This post is a great read for those involved in the details of your social media execution as well as those trying to evaluate the value of the platform in your overall strategy. Be sure to forward it along to the right folks on your team. Read on…

Peer Check: How Edu Marketers Use Social to Engage

Don’t blame Gen Z, but their insatiable appetite for social media can create quite the content grind on the backend. We hear it from our clients. Why must engaging social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, which afford marketers all the playfulness and flexibility you could ever want, require so much time and attention? It’s the lament of the modern marketer.

Content creation is not time intensive. You can use ChatGPT and crank out reams of it in minutes. (As if!)

See last week's post for our perspective on the use of ChatGPT for enrollment marketing (or any marketing).

Engaging, authentic, effective content creation is highly time-intensive.

Our advice: stay calm and scroll on. Sometimes, you just need a little inspiration from others who are playing in your same space.

Should Threads Be in Your Edu Marketing Strategy?

Students and digital media, right? TikTok rules! Oh, and Instagram. But, email is dead. Search is dead. Facebook is dead. (Pro tip: these all still have value to you).

Now entering the social media platform arena: Threads.

So, the questions on your team’s mind: Is now the right time to add Threads as a tactical element to our student recruiting strategy? How hard could it be? Is there any value here? Is our audience here?

Opportunities to meet in person:

The Intead team is gearing up for some amazing presentations and we hope you can join us.

  • CIEE 76th Annual Conference in Paris, Nov 8-10, 2023
  • PIE News Live in Boston, Nov 13-15, 2023
  • AIRC Annual Conference – we’ll be offering our full day digital marketing workshop here in Phoenix, Dec 6-9, 2023

The short answer to the Threads question: As of now, fall 2023, the Intead team leans toward the more measured wait-and-see approach. It’s early yet.

There’s plenty of time to integrate this new platform should it fully take off. And there are more than a few social media users who really hope it does, especially in the midst of the chaos of Twitter, err, we mean X.

What we know about Threads so far:

  • It aims to take X head-on, and with the full weight of Meta behind it, we give it a fighting chance.
  • More than 100 million users joined Threads within the first 5 days of its launch, making it the fastest-growing app in history. Proof that people were waiting for it. And further proof that Meta is a powerful force.
  • Yet, some wonder if that was a false start. Its user base promptly plummeted by over 80% in less than a month post-launch. And this is something we can’t ignore.

Still, we know some social media mavens on your team are debating if now is the right time to integrate Threads into your social media arsenal. Is this one of those first-mover advantage things? After all, effective lead generation and brand strategy require you to stay up-to-date and constantly try new approaches. We get it and encourage you to read on to better understand if Threads is something your student marketing strategy needs right now.

Getting Started with Snapchat Marketing for Universities

In an era where most social media platforms focus on curating an aesthetic feed, Snapchat stands out. It launched in 2012 as an app where messages “self-destruct” within seconds and has since added a variety of formats and filters. The platform quickly attracted young teens.

We published tips for academic institutions to make the most of this social tool back in 2016 (we waited to see if their ad platform was going to stick around). Since then, a lot has changed. You've noticed that too, we bet ; -)

Important to note, this social channel has a history of trend setting. SnapChat developed one of the original AR (augmented reality) filters and they continue to lead in many aspects. This is their lane and universities and private high schools using the platform should keep in mind that SnapChat tends to set the trend periodically in this area. Good to watch and learn here.

Overall, Snapchat's impermanent nature nurtures casual, free-flowing conversation, making it an enticing way to connect with students. Done well, it’s your ticket to getting in on prospective students’ conversations. And that’s precisely where you want to be.

Snapchat is where you show off your culture -- the feel of your campus as opposed to the specific features (programs).

Why your institution should be on Snapchat:

  • It’s young. 59% of Americans between the ages of 13 and 24 use Snapchat.
  • It’s global. 58% of Snapchat daily active users are based outside of North America, with India, France, and the UK leading the pack.
  • It’s growing. In Q2 of 2022, Snapchat had 347 million daily active users worldwide, a 22% growth year-over-year. Almost of all of that growth has been in international users while US users have remained fairly steady.
  • It’s unique. Not many high schools or universities are using Snapchat (yet), making it a way to stand out to prospective students.
  • It’s authentic. Snapchat offers a personalized way to share content and interact with students.

Ready to snap it? If so, read on to learn how you can incorporate this popular platform into your recruitment game plan and differentiate your institution. Be where your audience is.

Getting Started with TikTok Marketing for Ed Institutions

Marketing Rule No. 1: Be where your target demographic is. If your audience skews toward ages 16 to 24, then your audience is on TikTok. Know anyone focused on this market? We thought so.

TikTok is no longer exclusively a place for teens to post cutesy dance videos. When done correctly, this A-list short-form video platform is the perfect way for institutions to connect with prospective and current students in a format that makes sense to them. There’s a reason, after all, why TikTok is the first non-Facebook app to achieve 3 billion global downloads.

Your job: it’s all about getting the user experience right. If your university or private high school is not already on TikTok, we have to ask, why not?

Wait, we can probably answer that! Is it staffing shortages? (That's another blog post altogether).

We’ll go further out on the limb and suggest you may be struggling with developing a strategy for the platform (what behaviors are you trying to push?) and the challenge of creative execution (who has time to create all that fun stuff?). You know this already: TikTok is no place for drab, factual, instructional content.

You probably know this as well (or at least have sense of it): TikTok has 1 billion monthly active users, making it one of the fastest-growing social networks globally. It also has 50 million daily active users in the US, meaning 18.68% of Americans log into TikTok every day.

Due to its eerily intelligent algorithm pushing content onto its “For You” discovery feed (the page you see when you fire up the app), it’s easier than you may think for new viewers (aka prospective students) to discover your institution’s account. To boot, content created for TikTok can be repurposed for Instagram Reels, Twitter, and other platforms, making it a time-effective investment.

Read on to learn how your enrollment marketing team can develop and execute a savvy TikTok strategy that will get you noticed and help boost your enrollment…

Getting Started With Building an Audience

In the higher education space, your institution is competing with so many options that prospective students have. We know that most students attend a university within 50 miles of their home while large state institutions and the elite options have a stronger draw from coast to coast and beyond.

With these realities in mind, today we consider a foundational marketing goal: building a receptive audience so you can nurture prospective students from the point of awareness and inquiry to enrollment, no matter where they reside.

To state the obvious: virtual tours and informational webinars have taken on a bigger role (fewer campus visits), so a robust and engaging digital presence has never been more important to your recruitment process. Has your team evaluated and adjusted your approach to the student journey? Meeting them where they are in each step of their decision-making process?

We’ve offered a number of educational posts on student journey mapping processes you may want to read (for reference: our recent series Tracing the Student Journey Part 1 and Part 2).

We'll be talking about these enrollment management and student recruiting approaches and so much more at #NAFSA22 in just a few weeks. Let us know if you'd like to schedule a coffee with one of our team. We are leading 4 NAFSA sessions this year and one of them received the honor of being selected for live broadcast. Watch this space for details and we hope you can join us.

For now, read on for our top recommendations on how to build an audience online.

Harnessing the Influence of Your Brand Ambassadors

Let’s start with a cool stat: Google searches for “Influencer marketing" grew 1500% in the last three years. In 2019, the term "Marketing influencer" was searched 70,000 times a month! This according to Savica Dimitrieska and Tanja Efremova in their article, “The Effectiveness of the Influencer Marketing” published through Southwest University in Bulgaria.

Think YouTubers and TikTokers – content creators who are generating significant followings and translating that work into cash as they promote various products.

The question is: can this concept work for academia?

Our answer: yes, IF you can achieve true authenticity. If not, no. Full stop.

Academic administrators around the globe may be leaving a gap in their marketing strategy: the power of an influencer, but in the case of education, we are really talking about brand ambassadors who have influence with your target audience. In our view, true influencer marketing, which is growing globally, is a risky bet for the education market. But the concept, if adapted, has merit.

What we are saying is, recognize that you are not marketing alcohol, luxury vacations, apparel, or cosmetics and adjust the concept of “influencer marketing” accordingly. If that is unclear, give us a call.

When it comes to advertising and building trust, gone are the days of faceless testimonials and promotional brochures promising the ultimate educational experience. Generation Z values the opinions of social media influencers and bases their decisions on whether people they can relate to on YouTube give it a thumbs up or down.

A note of caution: marketing today is lightning fast and fickle. Your campus can be in the limelight one second, and culture canceled the next.

Read on for a few more relevant stats and perspective on how to make brand ambassador marketing part of your approach to student recruitment.
